Yuri's Night Bay Area 2008

Last Saturday Chad and I attended Yuri's Night Bay Area at Ames Research Center on the NASA compound in Mountain View --- about an hour south of SF.

Yuri's night is celebrated in different ways in many cities all over the country. In 2008 198 parties were officially held in 51 countries on 7 continents.

An explanation from the main Yuri's Night website:
"...Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin embarked on the historic first manned space flight on 12 April 1961. Twenty years later on 12 April 1981, the US launched the first space shuttle flight. We think that's something worth celebrating – so we do! Every year on April 12th Yuri's Night is celebrated all around the world – last year there were over 90 events or parties held in over 30 countries worldwide...."

According to the website there parties took place in diverse places as the NASA near Washington DC and on the South Pole
word.

The SF version was awesome. Chad and I got there early to volunteer and help with set up (9a - 1p) prior to the event (2p - 2a). There were rides, bands, scienc-y things, projections, music, djs, art installations, fire and air shows. The day time was more family oriented and the evening turned into a party. Costumes were encourage and I dutifully obliged wearing my 'space fairy' outfit.

My highlights were the mid-afternoon airshow, Tipper's set, Amon Tobin's set and building things with the cutest little space man on the planet (see pic on the right). A lot of the science stuff was pretty mind blowing but also a little over my head....
