Beaches and Cities

We spent a quick day and a half in Battambang, Cambodia where we took a Khmer cooking class in the morning (lots of coconut curry... 3 meals in one hour) and took a tour of the countryside from there we made our way down to Sihanoukville a beach town along the coast.

Our guest house was only a few steps from Serendipity beach with beautiful white sand beaches and ocean..Although the scenery was beautiful we were constantly bombarded by people trying to sell us: bracelettes, sarongs, fruit, lobster, spring rolls, postcards, manicure, pedicure, massage.. etc. or a limbless victim of the war or land mines would beg for change... the sad reality of Cambodia, making the experience less than entirely relaxing.

Aside from the cool ocean breezes and the spectacular views, the children on the beach were certainly the highlight. After they would try to sell you something (No! I don't need a bracellet!) they would just hang out and talk or play. The afternoon we spent a few hours chickenfighting and splashing around and goofing off with the kids in the water was probably my favorite part of that leg of the trip.

We are now in the capital, Phnom Penh, staying at a super chilled out guesthouse right on the lake. For a more sobering look at this country today we will visit the Killing Fields and S-21 an old highschool the Khmer Rouge turned into a tourture chamber.

Sunday we will head into Vietnam.
