Polaroid Ends Instant Film

(thanks lori, for alerting me to this tragic news)

After already ending production of instant film cameras, Polaroid will be shutting down several of it's plants and discontinuing instant Polaroid film.

From CNet:
"Polaroid, famed for photographic prints that develop within moments, is getting out of the film business.

The company is shutting down two plants in Massachusetts used to make film for professionals and artists this quarter, Boston Globe reported Friday. A similar plant in Mexico and one in the Netherlands for making consumer film packages will close by the end the year, and the company already has stopped making instant-film cameras, Polaroid said.

The Massachusetts-based company is interested in licensing its film technology to others, but if it doesn't happen, its film will likely run out in 2009 ..."

This marks a sad, sad day in artistic and photographic history. I'm attracted to Polaroids for their nostalgic aesthetic, their instant gratification and use them regularly in my work (as well as for fun) ... some examples below:

here is an image installation i did while at WSW based on text made from Polaroids:

and another set of Polaroid images I took on our cross country road trip:

and another example of Polaroids i-zone images incorporated into my collage work:

I have more examples of Polaroids taken around San Francisco and at Burning Man.

If what they say is true and the film will disappear from the market by next year I will have to start hoarding and buying in bulk otherwise Polaroids will eventually have to making their way out of my art practices.

sad.
