Grant Proposal Rewrite: HOME

ok, so rachel and I colloborated, long distance no less. She is in Seattle, I'm still in New Orleans; we talked, emailed, stressed out, and then talked and emailed some more. This is our reworked proposal to make an artist book about post-Katrina New Orleans at Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale NY this fall. We sent out the proposal this morning.... and now we're just waiting to hear back. PLEASE! cross your fingers for us. This has been such a long and intensive process. and definately a learning experience.

I really want to thank all my friends and everyone involved for your continued support of me in New Orleans. forrealz. my friends are awesome.

The images above and below suppliment our original book dummy.
and this is the final draft of our written proposal:

------------------------
Our original book concept, "Open Space" focused on our personal experience as volunteers in New Orleans post-Katrina. This concept has grown into a more focused investigation of the theme, home.

OUR THEME: HOME

A sense of home begins within a geographical location and its physical structures, but it exists and lives within the souls of those who inhabit and create that place, those who call it home. When a destruction of the physical space of home occurs (as it did when
Hurricane Katrina & Rita hit New Orleans), the concept of home changes. Living in New Orleans post-Katrina offers a unique physical & psychological perspective on the idea of home: the residents were forced to leave their homes; many have lived and are still living
without a home; much of the city remains physically destroyed; and yet people continue to return to this city because it still is their home.

Our book is geographically centered on New Orleans however the theme of home is universal. We hope to communicate through images & words a strong sense of where home exists when everything else has been lost or destroyed. Our goal is to create a book that is both timeless in it's theme and yet very specific to a certain time & place (life in New Orleans, summer 2006). We hope the reader to gain a deeper perspective on life in New Orleans post-Katrina and to reflect the common experience of home.

OUR PROCESS:

We are currently in the process of gathering experiences, conversations with residents and photographs related to HOME as a conceptual base. As a resident of the city, Shayna has been collecting this information while experiencing the texture of the city in its current state. Rachel plans to join her in August to continue to collect source material. We will then convene, reflect on our source material and extract a meaningful and enlightening narrative based on our cumulative experiences. We still plan to use both imagery & words in the form of silkscreen & letterpress.
